چکیده

The measurement of residential segregation patterns and trends has been limited by a reliance on segregation measures that do not appropriately take into account the spatial patterning of population distributions. In this paper we define a general approach to measuring spatial segregation among multiple population groups. This general approach allows researchers to specify any theoretically based definition of spatial proximity desired in computing segregation measures. Based on this general approach, we develop a general spatial exposure/isolation index ( ~ P*), and a set of general multigroup spatial evenness/ clustering indices: a spatial information theory index ( ~ H), a spatial relative diversity index ( ~ R), and a spatial dissimilarity index ( ~ D). We review these and previously proposed spatial segregation indices against a set of eight desirable properties of spatial segregation indices. We conclude that the spatial exposure/isolation index ~ P*—which can be interpreted as a

Spatial Segregation in Demography: A Short Review

Abstract. Spatial has always been an inherent component of demography, and demographic processes are inherently spatiotemporal. Recognizing the importance of spatial in general and spatial segregation in particular in demographic analysis has created new positions in demography and its conceptual and analytical frameworks. The notion of spatial segregation refers to the distribution of social...

Surveying the Spatial Justice and planning theories with emphasis on Iran’s conditions

Segregation has been widely discussed by social scientists and especially by urban geographers and planners over the past decades. However, regardless of their focus, most of these studies view segregation as an obvious case of spatial injustice. I argue that this implicit relationship between segregation, (in) justice, and space needs to be reexamined. This paper approaches this task by review...

Spatial Measurement of Residential Segregation

Segregation measures are useful tools for the analysis of patterns, causes and effects of residential segregation. However, most of empirical segregation studies have employed nonspatial and global measures. In other words, the measures so far applied are unable to consider the spatial arrangement of population and to show how much each areal unit contributes to the segregation degree of the wh...

Capturing the Two Dimensions of Residential Segregation at the Neighborhood Level for Health Research

Two conceptual and methodological foundations of segregation studies are that (i) segregation involves more than one group, and (ii) segregation measures need to quantify how different population groups are distributed across space. Therefore, percentage of population belonging to a group is not an appropriate measure of segregation because it does not describe how populations are spread across...

Measuring local segregation in Northern Ireland

Segregation measures have been applied in the study of many societies and traditionally such measures have been used to assess the degree of division between social and cultural groups across national or regional areas. The degree of segregation can vary substantially from place to place even within cities. In this paper, the concern is with religious/political segregation – particularly the pr...
